For My Atheist Friends: September 11, 2011

Specifically, this is for my Atheist friends who blame religion for everything bad in the world. You know who you are.
I get that some religious people use their beliefs to justify violence. So do some atheists. I get that some religious people hate gays. So do some atheists. I get that some religious people are hypocritical. So are some atheists.- Do you kind of see where I'm going with this? People are people. (So why should it be, you and I should get along so awfully? Sorry I couldn't help myself.) None of us is perfect. None of us thinks and believes exactly like anyone else. Why focus on this, I ask you? Why not try to improve the world around you, rather than waste so much energy attacking other people?
Here are some names for you: Mother Teresa of Calcutta; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Gandhi; Anne Frank. When I think of the people who have made a positive impact on the world, these are some of the many names that come to mind. These people drew strength and inspiration from their belief in a Higher Power and from their religious community.
Churches offer food, clothing and money to poor people all over the world. Churches offer shelter and comfort to people hard on their luck. Churches provide counseling services and recovery programs. Church leaders tell people week after week to go and love one another and do good deeds. Church communities build houses for people in need and schools in third world countries. Church members bring meals to people when there is a death in the family or someone is in ill health.
These are GOOD THINGS. So why do you focus on the biggoted idiots who happen to call themselves Christians? Why focus on the people who leave church and don't take the good messages with them? Why focus on the frauds? Why focus on the extremists who kill others in the name of Islam or whatever they claim to believe in? Why get so worked up about people stating publicly that they love something, just because it's religious in nature? Why let the good deeds that so many people do be lost because of a small percentage of total assholes? I challenge you and the religious people and the spiritual people (as I consider myself to be) to ALL try and make the world a better place and to be kind to one another.
